Automobile fatalities continue to drop around the world.
 
And road death numbers are still falling everywhere —  it seems — but in the United States.
 
Last year, nearly 43,000 people died on American roads, but this year that number is rising. One explanation is that while it may be safer to be inside a car, more deaths are occurring outside the car with a huge jump in pedestrian and cyclist deaths.
